Icíar Bollaín´s Biography
IcÍar Bollaín was born in Madrid, in1967. She started out in films as an actress at the age of 15 under the direction of Víctor Erice with The South (1983) and since them has taken part in over 20 feature films, including Misadventure, by Manuel Gutierrez Aragón, Leo & Child Nobody by Jose Luis Borau, Land and Freedom by Ken Loach, While there is light, The best of times, An Umbrella for Three & The Roof-top of the World, by Felipe Vega, Sublet, by Chus Gutierrez, The Stone Raft by George Sluizer, or more recently, Rage, by Sebastián Cordero.
As from 1991, she has formed part of La Iguana production company, with whom she made various short films as well as her early feature films, Hi, Are you Alone? (1995) Winner of Best New Director award from Valladolid International Film Festival, Flowers from Another World (1998) Grand Critic’s Award, Cannes International Film Festival, Take my Eyes (2003) seven Goya awards, including Best Film and Best Director, as well as Best Actress and Best Actor at the San Sebastian International Film Festival, Mataharis (2007) and Even the Rain (2010) Audience Award, Berlinale. Katmandu (2012) is her sixth feature film and the first to be shot in English. In recent years, she has received various tributes and distinctions, including the Julian Besteiro Prize for the Arts, the Federation of Progressive Women Prize and the 2007 Medal of Honour from the Carlos III University in Madrid. She is also author of the book entitled “Ken Loach, an observer with solidarity”. She is founding member of CIMA, the Association of Women in Cinema and Audiovisual Media.
