SYNOPSIS:
Based on the novel by Mikhail Sholokhov, the film portrays the destinies of the Don Cossacks during the First World War and Civil War in the Russian Empire. Grigory Melejov lives in Veshenskaya village. He is in love with Aksynia, but due to the insistence of his father, has to marry another girl. Upon discovering his affair with Aksynia, his young wife leaves him. Shortly before the war, Grigory and his beloved also leave the farm. While at the front in Austria, Grigory learns that the tsar has abdicated and the war has ended. He sets out to return home where Aksynia is waiting. There are
two versions: the original, Soviet, six hours duration (340 minutes) and a cut version for the United States of just under 107 minutes.
