SYNOPSIS: GUERNICA, by Alain Resnais & Robert Hessens On April 26, 1937, the Spanish Basque town of Guernica was bombed, leaving two thousand people dead, all civilians. Alain Resnais is inspired by the poem Paul Eluard composed in tribute to the martyred city, linking it with the paintings by Pablo Picasso. Resnais composes a cinematographic elegy, which tells of the vulnerability of man and his terrible ferocity. However, the painter, poet and filmmaker reject despair to extract from the words, images and art an invincible dignity:
